KEYSTREAK

The website is live

The site is up. This is the devlog and its first entry. I'll write here whenever something happens that's worth writing about.

Where the game is at

There is a full playable Keystreak beta, though so far it only runs on my machine. You can play songs, build streaks, get graded, and unlock more songs from there. A few others are testing it too and confirming the more advanced piano-aspects for me (I'm still learning..).

Two things are getting most of my attention right now.

The big one is meta-progression. Playing a single song works fine; what ties one song to the next, and gives you a reason to come back for another run, doesn't exist yet. That's what I'm building.

The other is the main game loop itself — new screens between songs, a better end-of-run screen, and a lot of small fixes to the navigation and the feel of progression.

That said, what gets my attention has a tendency to change depending on what I happen to find interesting at the time. It works for now, but I'll probably need a more structured way to approach this before long..

Early key art draft

I've also been messing around with some key art ideas etc for the game: Early key art draft

This is a very early draft and really just a first pass. It gets the falling notes and the keyboard across but not much else. Will probably revisit this many times before I'm happy with it. Needs to really show what actually makes Keystreak different from the other piano/midi/rhythm games out there, while not being to busy.

A note on the devlog itself

There will be more of these, both quick progress notes and longer posts when something is worth digging into. There's also an RSS feed if that's how you like to keep track. And if you'd rather just get an email when the game comes out, plus the more notable entries here, there's a signup form on the front page.
